So that if you wanted to, you could tell yourself the fact that Idgie dresses like a boy, that Ruth eventually moves in with her and they raise Ruth's child together, and that Ruth's child has Idgie's last name - Threadgoode - all meant nothing more than that these two women were very good friends.
